Basic and Translational Research

INTRODUCTION
Research in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UCLA spans a wide array of topics that include the molecular and developmental biology of immune mediated inflammatory diseases, the biology and immunogenetics of organ transplantation, environmental genomics and cancer risk, and vascular and Alzheimer's dementia.

As a result of targeted expansion in each of these areas, the number of faculty members in the Department has increased dramatically in recent years, and these investigators now supervise the work of forty-four graduate students, thirty-four post-doctoral fellows, and eleven junior faculty appointed in the Professional Research Series. These individuals and their research are supported by government and private support that totals $17,817,000.

The large group of investigators in the Department provides numerous opportunities for interaction through informal discussions as well as through frequent seminars, Grand Rounds presentations, and various symposia. In addition, faculty members in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine interface with the larger UCLA research community through established interdepartmental programs organized through the Molecular Biology Institute, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Brain Research Institute. As a result of these intra- and inter-departmental activities, the UCLA research environment is a highly interactive, colloborative one in which interdisciplinary research flourishes.

Further information about Departmental research activities can be obtained by contacting the Vice-Chair for Research, Dr. Kenneth Dorshkind.
