Fellowship Training:

Clinical Microbiology Fellowship

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a 1-2 year fellowship in Clinical Microbiology and Public Health under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Wagar and Dr. Michael Lewinski. The program is accredited by the Committee on Postdoctoral Education Programs (American Society for Microbiology) and the American Academy of Microbiology for certification purposes. Candidates will have an M.D. or a Ph.D. with demonstrated interest in the clinical practice of microbiology and public health laboratories. Trainees will thoroughly review all the specialty training areas of medical microbiology and simultaneously meet requirements for eligibility for the California Limited License Examination in Clinical Microbiology. The second year includes specialty training in public health laboratory at Los Angeles County public health services as well as infectious disease experience at West LA VAMC. Research is an important component and can consist of basic research topics as well as exciting new molecular applications to microbial diagnostics and epidemiology.
