Fellowship Training:
Klaus Lewin GI/Liver Pathology FellowshipA one year fellowship designed to provide an in-depth training in GI and liver pathology in the tradition of Dr. Klaus Lewin. The importance of clinicopathological interaction for optimal diagnostic interpretation is stressed. Fellows are encouraged to engage in research projects. The program historically has had a well defined core of responsibilities outlined for the fellow and has also allowed considerable flexibility for the fellow to develop clinical and academic skills important for career development. The core responsibilities include preparing cases of GI, liver and pancreatic diseases for a core of surgical pathology faculty with subspecialty expertise including Charles Lassman, Galen Cortina and Sarah Dry. The fellow organizes and attends two weekly conferences dedicated to GI and liver pathology with extensive clinical contact. The liver pathology experience is fortified by the close contact with hepatologists and liver transplant surgeons. The volume of cases approaches 10,000 specimens per year with thousands of endoscopic biopsies and GI surgical resections, hundreds of liver transplants as well as many non-transplant related liver diseases, and 50 pancreatic resections per year. Pediatric and adult diseases in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic pathology are represented. The fellow is well supervised and graded responsibility including a 'junior attending' status is the goal. The program flexibility allows for focused research efforts, or if desired, broader clinical experience by the fellow. A variety of local educational conferences are available. There is an academic fund for each fellow for attendance at national meetings or educational materials. GI/LIVER FACULTY:
