Fellowship Training:

Surgical Pathology Fellowship

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers one-year fellowships  in surgical pathology. Fellows rotate through various month-long assignments in surgical pathology at a senior or supervisorial level.  As frozen section/gross room supervisor, the fellow will oversee the preparation and interpretation of intraoperative consults and will guide residents and physician assistants in gross analysis and processing of specimens.  As junior attending, the fellow will rotate on many of our numerous surgical pathology specialty services directly checking and preparing cases with the resident on service.  The fellows will also rotate at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and at Olympia Hospital as junior attending, independently reviewing cases, preparing reports, performing frozen sections and bone marrow biopsies under the guidance of UCLA faculty at those institutions.  The fellows participate in and are responsible for preparing and presenting at numerous clinical conferences, tumor boards, and teaching conferences.  In addition, fellows may choose to rotate at a fellow level on a number of specialty services including hematopathology, neuropathology, GI pathology and cytopathology.  The program remains flexible for those with specific interests or requirements.  Vacation and elective time is built in.  We are committed to making this a meaningful, well-rounded experience in surgical pathology, with a goal of engendering a sense of confidence in the practice of surgical pathology.  Between three and five fellowship positions are offered each year.
