Recent Graduates Reflect on their CMP Experience

Peter Velasquez
Graduated June 2005
Laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Braun
Post-doctoral Fellow
Skirball Research Institute of
Biomolecular Medicine, NYU-SOM

The CMP Ph.D. Program offered me a didactic training program that fostered multiple components of my professional development.  Academically, the program provided me with a solid base for understanding histology, pathology and, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease.  In lab, my advisor provided a supportive environment that allowed me to pursue my interests.

A major component in being able to pursue my interests was the diverse infrastructure, both facilities and equipment, available throughout the department.  Professionally, the CMP Ph.D. Program, through its by-laws, offers its students opportunities to assume leadership roles in the Pathology department. Additionally, the faculty are supportive in students’ participation in leadership activities aimed at advancing the prestige of the CMP program, such as a department-wide retreat or participation in UCLA student government.

Together, these opportunities allow for each student to build a solid theoretical and technical scientific base.  They also foster the leadership and multitasking skills necessary to become independent thinkers in any given field of the scientific workforce.”

“The CMP program is an excellent program for graduate students mainly because of its many resources. The program is composed of friendly and knowledgeable faculty, with diverse research backgrounds and expertise. Furthermore, the program employs a curriculum that fosters scientific learning and effectively produces independent researchers.”

"The CMP program at UCLA has been a remarkable experience.  Members of the faculty are among the leaders in their fields and have been tremendously supportive and have consistently inspired my intellectual curiosity."

Kan Lu
Graduated June 2005
Post-Doctoral Fellow
Laboratory of Dr. Paul Mischel

Labs in the Pathology department are very diverse in their interests, so as a student in the CMP program it was nice to be exposed to many different research fields.  To me, the most exclusive asset is the direct access you have to invaluable resources such as clinical specimens, which enhance your research considerably.”

Graduated May 2005
Research Fellow,
Children’s Hospital Boston

I am incrediby proud to have been a member of and to have received my graduate training in the CMP Ph.D. program.  CMP faculty are sincere, excellent mentors.  Peer CMP graduate students are committed, innovative persons.  Both faculty and students consistently strive to make the CMP graduate program the strongest that it can be, and the environment is one of support and collaboration.  I feel extremely well prepared for the post-doctoral fellowship that I am currently pursuing at Children's Hospital Boston."

Graduated June 2006
Laboratory of Dr. Peter Tontonoz
Post-doctoral Fellow
The Salk  Institute, La Jolla, CA

Looking back, I am really happy that I made my decision to join our CMP Ph.D. program. It provides a great scientific and educational environment for us beginning scientists. We are learning biomedical sciences here through many ways, personal instructions from PIs, collaborations between labs, as well as periodic grad student meetings and activities. As a student interested in turning what we achieved from research into any potential medical applications, I am very delighted to see that CMP program provides many courses directly related to this. And last, it is fantastic to make many friends here in CMP program with our faculties, fellows and students. Thanks.”
