Students are required to act as teaching assistants for a total of two quarters, one in the second year and one in the third year. Enroll in 495 Preparation for Teaching course (available in Fall or Winter through the Department of Microbiology and Immunology or the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology). The preparation course must be taken prior to or concurrent with first teaching assignment. Enroll in appropriate 375 Teaching Practicum course (consult assigning department for applicable course ID number.
- (See Nomination of Doctoral Committee for detailed instructions)
Between June 1 of the second year , and no later than September 30 (beginning of the third academic year), the student must complete the selection of a doctoral committee. At least one member of the four-member doctoral committee must be an expert in the proposed orals topic. The student should submit the names of his/her selected committee members to the Graduate Program Student Affairs Coordinator (Sue Ellen Parsee) who will complete the nomination form, get it approved by the Graduate Student Advisor and then forward to the Graduate Division for final approval.
- (See First Annual Committee Meeting for detailed instructions)
Once the doctoral committee has been approved, the student must meet with the committee (no later than December 1), give a brief (30 minute) oral presentation of the potential dissertation project, and set a timeline for the Oral Qualifying Exam. At least one - two weeks prior to meeting with the committee, the student should submit a one-two page written report to the committee emphasizing the background and rationale, but also including a summary of the proposed research (Potential Ph.D. Project ) .
Attendance at the monthly CMP Seminar series is REQUIRED. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to attend lab meetings in which they discuss their work and participate in other seminars or journal clubs in their research area.

At the end of the Spring quarter and before September 30, the student should complete an Annual Departmental Progress Report and submit it to the Graduate Student Affairs Coordinator for inclusion in the student’s permanent records.
Enroll in 596 laboratory course, or 599 Dissertation Research course (if advanced to candidacy). Consult CMP Graduate Student Affairs Coordinator for relevant course ID number and number of units required. Complete any required coursework deficiencies. Student must be enrolled in minimum total of 12 units of course work each quarter.
This requirement may be completed during any quarter of the third year. Enroll in applicable 375 Teaching Practicum course. Note: Petitions to postpone a ta’ship must be submitted to the ACCESS TA subcommittee for approval at least one quarter prior to the scheduled assignment.
The OQE consists of the oral defense of a written proposal. The written proposal and oral defense must be completed by the end of Spring quarter during the student’s third year (if re-examination is required, no later than December 30).Approximately one month prior to the prospective oral exam date, the student should prepare a one page report (CMP Proposal and Specific Aims) and submit it to the doctoral committee for approval. Once the proposal has been approved, the student should plan 4-6 weeks to complete the final written proposal (Oral Qualifying Exam Abstract and Specific Aims) and study for the oral exam. Two weeks prior to the exam, the student should submit the completed proposal to the doctoral committee. (See Written and OQE Exam for more detailed information). The student will be ADVANCED TO CANDIDACY within two weeks from the date the official, signed Report on the Oral Qualifying Examination and Request for Advancement to Candidacy form is received by the Graduate Division. If the student’s performance on the exam is unsatisfactory, the student will receive a deferral and be re-examined at a later date (within six months). Note: A student cannot advance to candidacy and thus cannot receive his/her Ph.D. degree without first passing the Oral Qualifying Exam.
