FIRST ANNUAL COMMITTEE MEETING
Spring/Fall of second year – no later than December 1

By December 1 (beginning of third year) the student should meet (First Annual Committee Meeting) with the committee to discuss the potential Ph.D. project, and set a timeline for the Oral Qualifying Exam. One week prior to the meeting, the student must submit a short (one – two page) proposal (Potential Ph.D. Project Report) for the research project, emphasizing the background and rationale, but also including a summary of the proposed research. The meeting will be scheduled for approximately 1½ hours. It should consist of a brief presentation by the student (about 20 – 30 minutes) of planned research and an evaluation by the committee of the student’s understanding of the rationale and background for the research.
