All students entering through ACCESS are required to complete a minimum of two (2) quarters of formal teaching practicum in addition to a course in teaching principles and methods. Students are required to complete at least one quarter and the methods course during the second year of graduate school... If agreeable with the mentor, students have the option of completing the second required quarter also during the second year. If one of the quarters is for a medical or dental school course, then the other required quarter must be for a course in the College of Letters and Science. All other students will complete both quarters in L&S.
Those students who have been selected to assist a medical or dental school course will be notified by the department. . All other students (including those doing summer rotations should review the list of courses distributed by ACCESS during the summer quarter and meet with their mentor or adviser to determine which course and quarter(s) will work best for the student and the lab. The student should then select a first, second and third choice of courses and quarter from the list, complete the form and return it by the deadline indicated to JODY SPILLANE in the ACCESS Office (172 Boyer Hall, 157005). The form may also returned by email to uclaacess@mednet.ucla.edu or by fax to the ACCESS Office, ext 6-1636 (206-1636). A copy of the TA Request Form (see following pages) should also be given to the CMP Graduate Student Affairs Coordinator.
Students may be asked to interview with the instructor before an assignment can be made. L&S students are generally assigned to courses taught by their degree department unless they’ve requested otherwise. Others will generally teach both quarters within the same department. Both the student and the ACCESS office will be notified of the student’s assignment by the SAO of the teaching department. Please note, the departmental faculty coordinating each course determines final course assignments.
Once an assignment has been made, the student will also be notified of the teaching principles and methods courses offered by that department. Students will need to complete this course in advance or concurrent with the teaching quarter. These courses vary from department to department, but generally meet for two hours per week and are offered in the fall or winter. Only Letters and Science departments offer them. Students teaching in medical or dental school courses may attend a TA training course prior to completing their medical school teaching practicum. Once you have been assigned to an L&S course for your second quarter, you will be required to attend the training offered by that department.
Note: Students for whom English is not the native language must pass the TOP (Test of Oral Proficiency) Exam with a minimum score of 50 before they can be hired as a TA. A student scoring 45 may serve as a teaching assistant if concurrently enrolled in an English as a Second Language course specifically aimed at improving spoken communication (ESL 39A, 39B, 39C,
38 and 108, as appropriate.
