GRADUATE DIVISION FELLOWSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS
2006-2007

Two CMP students were granted a 2006-2007 Graduate Division Dissertation Year Fellowship Award. Congratulations to Lan Lin and Josh Deignan!!

  • Lan Lin’s research is focused on the function and regulation of the juvenile hemochromatosis gene HJV, and its protein product hemojuvelin. The title of her dissertation will be ‘Sensing Iron: Mechanism of Iron Dependent Regulation of Hepcidin by Hemojuvelin”

  • Josh Deignan’s research is centered on the study of arginase deficiency and the construction of a transgenic mouse extending to the study of prostate cancer and the possible role of arginase in cancer pathogenesis. The working title of Josh’s dissertation is: “Characterization of the Arginase I/Arginase II Double Knockout Mouse."

Congratulations to CMP Student Representative, Shannon Mumenthaler, on her receipt of the highly competitive UCLA Affiliates Scholarship. This is the second award for Shannon in the 2006-2007 academic year. At the CMP Orientation/BBQ Event on October 4, Shannon was presented with a Certificate of Achievement and a $250 check for ‘Timely Advancement to Candidacy”.

CONGRATULATIONS to NIMA GHARAVI, recent CMP/MSTP graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Judith Berliner. Nima has been awarded the Irving H Page Young Investigator Award given by the Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology of the American Heart Association. Nima received his Ph.D. on June 16, 2006
