Research Client Services

Providing support for the clinical research activities of UCLA faculty is an important mission of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. This encompasses both the tests and procedures common to routine patient care as well as services specific to the research setting. Faculty and Research Service Core Laboratories play important roles in a number of SPOR programs and individual investigator research projects.

Faculty consultation: Department faculty are available to advise on relevant research services for their areas of expertise, and serve as collaborators for studies when appropriate. Please contact the Chief of the respective service for further information and advice.

Tissue collection: The Translational Pathology Core Laboratory (TPCL) will prospectively collect clinical tissue samples removed at surgery along with relevant clinical information as permitted by HSPC approval. Selected sets of banked de-identified tissues are available also. Please visit the TPCL web pages for further information.

Blood and other body fluid sample collection and storage: The Clinical Laboratory assists clinical study coordinators in sample collection and temporary storage. Please contact Nerissa Juse for further information. A long term sample banking service is offered by the UCLA Immunogenetics Center.

Special Research Testing Services: The Research Services Division is composed of core laboratories serving the clinical research community. Technologies and services include genotyping and gene expression microarrays, high throughput proteomic analyses, tissue collection and analysis (including immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and digital image analysis), tissue microarray, and specialized immunology testing. Please visit the Core Research Laboratories web pages for more information.

Clinical data retrieval and analysis: In conjunction with the hospital Analytical Services section, we assist both prospective and retrospective HSPC approved studies that utilize pathology and laboratory data that is part of the medical record. Please contact Leslie Ingram-drake, M(ASCP), for further information.

Modified test charges for clinical research: Clinical laboratory tests performed for approved research studies are typically charged at reduced rate. Please contact Nerissa Juse at njuse@mednet.ucla.edu for further information. For GCRC related studies, please contact Najib Aziz, M.D.
